My Card Boo-Boo

Today being April Fool's Day,  Darnell over at DJKardKreations  wants to see the times we've made a fool of OURSELVES when making a card - the ones that went wrong. She's having a one day only challenge where we can share our bloopers.

I hope I'm actually going to get chance to be around to link my own card to it, because today is a Very Big Day in the Willis household, it's going to be my husband's first day of retirement, and we have exciting plans for the day that don't really involve me sitting here blogging (I wrote this earlier in the week). But on the other hand he'll probably find he has umpteen phone calls to make in order to Make It Official and I'll be left twiddling my thumbs.....

Now I don't know about you, but when I make a card and things go wrong, I dismantle it and start again - I don't stop and take a photo of it first. So I had to think long and hard about what to share.

Only in the last few days, I made the classic mistake of sticking the front panel on to a card upside down, and had to remove it and start again.....

It was to be a tent fold card, and as you can see, the butterflies would have all appeared to be dive bombing the table.

But Darnell is really looking for completed cards, ones where you didn't realise until you'd finished that there is a blooper on it. I didn't think I had one, and then the other day I finished a card for a future Twofers DT project.

I was trying to give this card a masculine feel, so I decided to use a dark brown button as the embellishment on the ribbon wrap.

When I first finished it, I was really pleased with it, but when my husband saw it he said "That button spoils it". I got a second opinion from a couple of friends, both of whom agreed with him. So I slept on it (not literally, of course, that would have creased it) and next day I looked again and thought "That button spoils it". And it does, it's too big, too heavy, makes the card look as if it is about to topple over to the right, and doesn't link in with anything else in the design.

So I had to remove the button - have you any idea how strong Pinflair glue is? - and rescue it.

Do you want to see the rescued card? Well, I'm afraid you have a very long wait because I'm not sharing it until May 21st. APRIL FOOL!

  3. What a fun card with that big button - I'm glad you managed to save it. The butterfly card looked like something I'd make - that's hilarious too! TFS

  4. LOL . . . I liked the April Fool at the end (clever too, because now I can't wait to see it of course). Trust our men to be so forthright . . . a female would have 'dressed it up', but sometimes we need to hear it like it is! Thanks for making me giggle today! Happy April Fool's Day and I hope you do get to do something other than "twiddling your thumbs". Hazel xx

  5. HaHa done the upside down thing more times that I will admit too. I also have a helpful critic in house and most of the time he is right.

  7. Great story! I often sleep on my questionable cards and in the morning decide they still look horrid! In the bin they go! Pretty sure we've all done the upside-down thing too. My DH always says my cards look good; just can't trust his judgement, haha! Enjoy the day. Bev

  8. April fools.......LOL........that was a good one!
I don't know what is worse, upside down or very cooked, but I have experience in both...LOL
    Have a great day.

  9. Upside-down...yep, done that more times than I care to admit! And your giraffe, with or without the button, looks mighty handsome by me! Happy retirement to your husband; hope the day is filled with all those celebration activities you have planned (that sound like much more fun then 'thumb twiddling' *grin*)

  10. Ugh, yes upside down. I start to do that a lot! I love the giraffe. I have a really hard time with buttons.....which is probably why they sit in my stash.

  11. Ha! great share : ) I also like the upside down butterflies. I just did something similar on an Easter card. The card was fine but I wrote in he wrong place inside so my writing was upside down. giggles! I sent it anyway!LOL

    Happy April : )

  14. Great card even with the button. I have done things upside down too...so I fully understand.

  15. I love it, "dive-bombing butterflies"..I can sooo see me doing that! I like your card, with or without the button. How wonderful to get second opinions, though, so you have a fresh perspective. Thanks for sharing!

  16. Ah, yes, I wish I had a dollar for every time I put the panel on upside down! I have to say, butterflies falling OUT of the sky, rather than soaring up, would be a bit of a shock coming out of the envelope! Now, as far as your excellent giraffe card, Jane, I am going to agree with you and the in-house critic! The button does pull the eye away from that gorgeous creature and I'm so glad you were able to operate successfully!! Thank you so much for being a sport and playing in my first BFCBB Hop!! Happy Retirement to your OH and may you not kill each other in the years to come!! Hugs, Darnell

  17. Upside down and on the back is often accomplished around here! Love the giraffe, but I'm glad the button is gone! Can't wait to see what replaces it!

  18. Happy Retirement Day too! I love your giraffe card, and can't wait to see what you replace the button with. I think all of us have done the upside down, wrong side of the fold, etc. I know I do it all the time! Enjoyed hearing the backstory, and hope you're having a wonderful day celebrating the start of a new part of your lives! Happy April Fool's Day too. TFS

  19. So often it is that one last detail that ruins a card. It's a wonder we don't all drink.

  20. Wonderful card with or without the button!

  21. I do the upside-down thing more times than I want to admit!! lol... Or sometimes, I get the front panel right and then stamp the sentiment upside-down inside!! (Same effect! Arrrgh...) Great giraffe card, even with the big button. I have torn off a lot of bows and buttons, etc...leaving a huge scar that requires an even larger embellishment. Ha.
Happy, happy retirement to your hubby!

  22. Oh goodness, I think all card makers have put our papers on upside down before, but I know it still makes me feel really foolish when I do that. Your giraffe card is fabulous! I happen to like the button as it draws out the dark matting. I guess these boo boo's are all in the eye of the beholder. Hugs, Brenda

  23. I wonder if there's a serious card-maker around who hasn't affixed the main panel upside down at least once? Like you, I have always discovered the problem before I sent it out...and then repaired it!

  24. TFS your boo boos. The panel problem is one several of us suffer from. Glad to know we aren't alone :)

  25. Sometimes it is good to get a second or third opinion. I go to my hubby for a "consultation". He has a good eye for color, etc. Cute story and I love the giraffe on your card. TFS

  26. Upside down panels happen at my desk too Jane, very pretty butterfly panel and do have to agree the the button is to 'heavy'. Have a great weekend Robyn

  27. Ha, yes, dive bombing butterflies cracked me up! Sounds like you can count on your husband for a good opinion. Mine's colorblind and says everything is beautiful - sometimes without even looking at it.

  28. I'm happy to see others do the topsy turvy upside down thingy! Love the giraffe story too ;-)

  29. I also have some bad times have stuck panel to the base card. But besides the little things your two cards are wonderful. Butterflies are happy and look as if they had a gathering of. In the second card you wonderfully matched colors and I really like the giraffe.

  30. I have place the front panel on in the wrong direction so many times, it's not funny. I usually end up cutting it off the cardstock and then putting it on a new card front.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes, I have put many a card upside down too. Thanks for sharing your story...cute post.

  32. Great post! Since I rarely use PP I did not yet encounter the upside down thing... I never photograph my ugly cards, they get recycled and used for snippets or simply thrown away...

  33. I think that we have to listen to our husbands. :-)) Sometimes they give us useful advices. You have created a great masculine card. I'm glad that you can rescue the butterfly card as well.
    Hugs, Sonja
